Personally: IDS West 2023 Picks

Another year, another IDS! For those not familiar with it, IDS is the Interior Design Show and comes out to the West Coast yearly - normally in September. We did miss a couple when COVID had everything closed up so another year to meet with vendors, discover new brands and socialize with fellow designers is such a treat. Find out what caught our eyes this year!

The exhibit that stood out for me the most was Timeless Wine Cellars. I seem to be obsessed with wine features and storage walls right now and they had a beautiful display for the show. I loved that they used a variety of materials and finishes and they were creative with how wine can be stored safely and featured in our homes all at the same time. They were like jewelry on display, and who doesn’t love that.

The exhibit that caught my eye was NewTechWood, their product is composite wood which is an alternative to what we know as classic wood. It can be used in both interior and exterior applications, whether you're looking for a feature for your fireplace, or a wood look for the siding of your home, plus easy to install decking, NewTech has it all. Their product is durable, low maintenance and most importantly, it is eco-friendly. NewTech’s composite wood is made from 95% recycled materials such as plastic bottles, and reclaimed wood fibers. They have a wide range of colours to choose from, but they are also able to create custom variations for a more personal touch. And in case you are wondering how long the product will last, NewTech has got you covered by adding a coat of protection that doesn’t allow the product to rot, stain, or fade as traditional wood would.

The piece at IDS that I loved the most was by Lock and Mortice with La Bomba Floristry. They were showcasing the Summit dining table, which is beautiful, but I was more obsessed with the forestry statement piece of a single tree suspended in the air. I loved the idea of having a floral arrangement hanging from underneath the lighting; it opens up countless possibilities to create incredibly stunning centerpieces and an array of captivating moods. I will definitely be re-envisioning this look for upcoming projects as soon as possible!

Ian Marsh may have had one of the smallest exhibits at IDS, but his custom Lighting company had the greatest impact on me! The 24 Karat Collection is exquisite, and it would be a dream to work with him in the future. There’s always ALOT of bathroom hardware shown at the IDS show, and the number of finishes and accent colours that you can choose from is certainly increasing. There were a number of companies that had accent colours in their hardware, that you could change out if you got tired of the colour and I really liked that. Cantu showcased a free standing outdoor shower from Blu Bathworks, that you can hook up to your garden hose…I thought that was pretty exciting too!!

Something that always catches my eye at IDS are all the amazing furniture pieces. A new find for me this year was Atelier Dimo, an island based carpentry company. Showcasing a solid wood longue chair with superb craftsmanship I instantly fell in love. Using the natural beauty of wood (with multiple species to choose from) and all wood joinery I can easily see this piece as the perfect statement for any space!

One of the exhibits that stood out to me was the beautifully crafted Hewing Haus modular home. Hewing Haus specializes in prefabricated but customizable modular homes and is local to Abbotsford BC. And because they’re prefabricated indoors, they’re able to avoid weather delays - which is a big plus for Vancouver. I loved the black siding on the exterior mixed with the black accents and lighter woods inside. It featured large windows to allow for maximum natural light and felt spacious with quality finishes.

One more thing to highlight: they use renewable materials from local and sustainably managed forests!

IDS is always a fun time and we LOVE finding new inspiration to bring into current and upcoming projects. With our creative juices flowing what project of yours can we tackle next!

Happy Thursday 😁
